The Friendship Gardens at Headwaters Healthcare Centre (HHCC) in Orangeville, Ontario, are a volunteer-driven initiative that has transformed the hospital’s outdoor spaces into a sanctuary for patients, visitors, and staff. What began in 1999 with a single fountain garden has grown into twenty gardens and more than 400 trees, all designed and maintained by dedicated community members.

Located in the “Headwaters” region, where streams and creeks converge to form the Credit River, flowing into Lake Ontario, the gardens are closely tied to the local environment and the community’s responsibility to protect it.

With several stormwater drains on-site, runoff carrying road salt, litter, and chemicals threatened to pollute the waterways feeding into the Credit River. For the Friendship Gardens volunteers, protecting water quality was as important as creating beautiful green spaces.

Friendship Gardens

The Friendship Gardens team received an EnviroPod™ LittaTrap™ through an NGO giveaway run by EnviroPod™. They received it on behalf of the Credit Valley Conservation.

Installed within a catch basin, the LittaTrap™ provided a cost-effective, easy-to-maintain solution to capture pollutants such as litter, cigarette butts, phragmites seeds and debris before they could enter nearby waterways.

The performance of the 1st LittaTrap™ exceeded expectations, encouraging the Friendship Gardens to purchase an additional 4 LittaTraps to expand protection across the site. They also have plans for many more LittaTraps to be installed.

“It is very important that we keep the water clean of invasive phragmites and clean of chemicals and garbage. I wanted the LittaTraps to prevent some of the salt/road salt, chemicals, cigarette butts, and garbage from flowing through to this precious water.”
Lynn Sinclair-Smith, Friendship Garden Coordinator
